As you get older, taking care of your health becomes increasingly important if you wish to live a long, active and happy life. After the age of 65, the risk of complications and infections increase when you get sick. The good news is that there is much you can do to strengthen your immune system, prevent serious illness and boost your quality of life. We have compiled a checklist to help you make healthy choices throughout the new year …
1. Go for regular check-ups
Nowadays, wellness visits go beyond the standard physical exam, allowing doctors to identify preventive measures to keep you healthy and save you money. With conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, early detection may prevent long-term complications. In addition to your annual wellness check-up, remember the recommended health screenings for prostate cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer.
2. Stay active
As we get older, we often find excuses to slow down, but regular physical activity boosts the immune system, improves quality of life and elevates the mood. This does not mean that you have to partake in strenuous activity – low impact exercise can be just as effective. Read our article on the best exercises for seniors for some ideas.
3. Eat for your health
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins gives your immune system a boost and protects against harmful viruses and bacteria that cause illnesses. Fruits and vegetables are good sources of antioxidants which protect your cells from damage and keep your body healthy. Also limit your intake of sugary foods that can trigger inflammation in the body.
4. A handy tip
If there is one thing that Covid-19 taught us, it is that washing our hands regularly and properly can go a long way in preventing illness. Wash your hands frequently with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds or use an antibacterial hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your face with your hands.
5. Loud and clear!
Do you often ask people to repeat what they have said? Does your partner complain that you have the TV volume up too high? Do you have a persistent ringing in your ears? If so, you might be experiencing hearing loss or tinnitus. Do not let this interfere with your quality of life – visit your health care provider to find out if you might need hearing aids.
6. Take care of your eyesight
It’s important to have your eyes checked regularly to prevent eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, low vision and even dry eyes. There are also preventive measures you can take to take care of your eyes, such as wearing sunglasses with UV protection, even on a cloudy day.
7. Manage stress
Chronic stress increases your body’s production of the stress hormone cortisol. Too much cortisol can disrupt different functions in your body, including your immune system. Find ways of managing stress, such as meditation, exercise, and other relaxing activities.
8. Put a spring in your step
Our feet and ankles are under constant pressure, making them more susceptible to inflammation and injury. Taking care of your feet and wearing comfortable shoes is important to maintaining an active lifestyle.
9. Healthy mind, healthy body
An active mind is just as important as an active body if you wish to improve your health and quality of life. Read our article on keeping mentally active for some helpful tips.
10. Get your beauty sleep
Not only is sleep a stress buster, but it also gives the body an opportunity to repair itself. Getting enough shut eye can result in a stronger immune system, making it easier for your body to fight off viruses. Sleep is also important as you get older because it can improve memory and concentration. Aim for at least seven and a half to nine hours of sleep per night.
