Spring is in full bloom and the weather is lovely – it is the perfect time of year to take an ageing loved one on an outing … Getting out and enjoying interactions with others and with nature is important at any age, but perhaps even more so for older adults, in whom social isolation can hasten a general state of decline. Outings for senior citizens have many health benefits, including improved cognitive functioning, better emotional health, enhanced sleep, better Vitamin D levels, improved immune system and even increased life span.
Do you want to take an ageing loved one on an outing, but are feeling unsure of where to go or what to do? We have rounded up some ideas …
1. Go for a leisurely nature walk
Encourage mom or dad to put on their most comfortable shoes and some sunscreen and head outside for a nature stroll. They’ll get plenty of fresh air and sunshine, as well as some gentle exercise and a refreshing change of scenery.
2. Visit a garden
South Africa has many magnificent botanical gardens that are home to numerous indigenous and endangered plants and wildlife. The change of scenery will let your senior loved one blossom again too.
3. Go birdwatching
Get out mom or dad’s binoculars and zoom lens. South Africa is said to be one of the best countries in the world for birdwatching with a flock of great birding spots and about 900 bird species.
4. Make a trip to the local library
Apart from giving your loved one free access to a wealth of books, libraries also often offer classes or programmes where they can learn a new skill or craft – and meet like-minded individuals.
5. Visit a museum
Fancy some time-travelling? Visiting a museum can increase your ageing loved one’s sense of well-being, while inspiring, challenging and stimulating them.
6. Dine al fresco
Food just tastes better when enjoyed in fresh air. Book an outside table at mom or dad’s favourite restaurant or pack a picnic basket and gather their friends and family.
7. Visit an art gallery
Engaging with art has various health benefits and can even lead to greater life satisfaction. According to a Norwegian study, these benefits apply to those who make art and to those who view it passively.
8. Take them shopping at your local farmer’s market
Not only will the produce be fresher, you’ll also be supporting the wider local economy and community.
Leaving home from time to time is crucial for physical and mental health. We hope these ideas have inspired you to have some fun on an outing with your ageing loved one!
