Nazareth House is a registered Non-Profit Organistaion (NPO 038-257) and a recognised Public Benefit Organisation (PBO 930 002 374). The organisation incurs operating expenses, which are far higher than the revenues generated through the ‘Board and Lodging’ fees and ‘Government Grants’ received. This is due to the subsidisation of child and elderly care, outreach projects, and community work.
Nazareth Care is wholly reliant on the income of donations, legacies, and ‘goods in kind’ to continue the mission. All donations, grants, and other incomes are a necessity to fulfill the shortfall and to ensure the sustainability and longevity of the organisation.
The 20K Campaign is part of a broader strategic plan to ensure the organisation continually works toward self-funding where possible to prevent the closure of facilities and outreach centres thus directly affecting those most vulnerable residents in our care. Certain Nazareth Houses are designed and operate to generate surplus funds. These surplus funds are utilised to subsidise and support those Nazareth Houses, Child and Youth Care Centres and outreach programmes which are at the heart of the mission. The reality is, however, that these facilities do not generate sufficient surplus to cover the overall monthly deficits, and therefore donations and support is needed.
The facilities which receive the most financial support, and where donations and fundraising received is allocated to, include Nazareth Houses in Yeoville, Johannesburg and Elsies Rivier in Cape Town; the Child and Youth Care Centres in Yeoville, Johannesburg and Vredehoek Cape Town; the Frances Shannon Hospice and self help centre in Warrenton and Morning Star Creche at Fourteen Streams near, Kimberly; and the many outreach projects initiated by the Sisters of Nazareth across the country e.g. feeding programmes etc.
At these specific Nazareth Houses and Care facilities, residents are at different financial levels, some of whom have limited funds to no funds available. Our Child and Youth Care Centres recieve only limited ‘Government Grants’ and these do not cover the full costs to provide the necessary care, education, and quality of life for our children. These shortfalls are therefore covered and subsidised by Nazareth Care. All funds collected through the 20K Campaign and by other means, are distributed throughout the Nazareth Care organisation, and allocated to the area in most need at the time.
